Intel 1151 socket chipsets
As explained a little earlier, the Intel socket 1151 is now segmented into two categories, with one side motherboards compatible Coffee Lake (Intel CPU 8th generation) and motherboards compatible Kaby Lake Skylake (Intel CPU 6th and 7th generation).
Coffee Lake Chipsets
Currently, motherboards compatible with Coffee Lake processors come with a single chipset, the Intel Z370. This is the most complete Intel chipset and it adapts very well to overclockable processors.
Kaby Lake/Skylake Chipsets
For older generation Intel motherboards, today there are three different chipsets: B250, H720, and Z270.
The Intel Z270 chipset is primarily intended for gamers who want to set up a muscular setup and try their hand at overclocking. It is the one offering the most PCI-E lanes or even USB 3.0 ports.
Motherboards equipped with the H270 chipset are generally positioned in the mid-range. They are ideal for most players, offering technical specifications quite similar to those of Z270 cards. In practice, they are recommended for players who do not intend to overclock their processors.
Entry-level motherboards generally incorporate an Intel B250 chipset. It is intended for players who do not necessarily want to overclock their processors and who are also limited to a single graphics card. Otherwise, all that most players might need is left in the game.

AM4 motherboard chipsets
With the arrival of Ryzen processors and AM4 motherboards, there are now three main chipsets: A320, A350, and X370. What format for my motherboard?
Once the motherboards have been sorted by socket then chipset, it remains to select its format! The cards are in fact available in three main formats and all do not necessarily adapt to your PC case.
The standard ATX format is the one found on most configurations. It adapts to most medium or large boxes and generally offers full connectivity for its various components.
The Micro-ATX format incorporates the main characteristics of the ATX, but in a slightly more compact square format. It, therefore, adapts much better to compact boxes and other “mini-towers”.
Finally, the Mini-ITX format makes it possible to obtain motherboards that are even more compact but whose specific features are often revised downwards. In Mini-ITX, we are generally limited to two slots for its RAM and it is not possible to combine several GPUs.
Remember to check the different formats accepted by your box. As a general rule, “Mid-Tower” boxes adapt to the three main motherboard formats, even if positioning a Mini-ITX card there will not necessarily be very aesthetic.
Connectivity for PC Gamer motherboard

Note that the maximum frequency of your RAM may vary from one motherboard to another, and more precisely from one chipset to another. So understand that if you buy DDR4 3200 Mhz modules and place them on an AMD B350 or Intel B250 motherboard, you will not be able to achieve such frequencies.
SATA connectors allow you to connect your hard drives, SSDs, and other optical drives. If for most players 4 connectors should be more than enough, some users will favor motherboards with 6 or 8 SATA connectors in order to benefit from more storage space (interesting for video editing or large consumers of films for example).
PCI-Express (or PCIe) ports allow you to connect certain components to your motherboard, such as a sound card, a WiFi card but above all a graphics card.
For the players, it will be necessary to be particularly attentive to the presence of PCI-Express 16x ports, since it is on these that one will be able to come to connect his or her GPUs. Motherboards positioned at entry-level generally integrate a single 16x PCIe port, but it is possible to move towards cards integrating two or three PCI-Express 16x ports in order to combine several graphics cards (via CrossFireX or SLI technologies) .
To put it simply, the more PCIe ports your motherboard has, the more components you can come and connect to it. So choose according to your current and future needs.
USB connectors and input/output panels
For the USB connectors, it is rather telling. If you are used to connecting a multitude of peripherals to your machine, opt for a card with a sufficient number of USB ports (both on the front and on the rear panel).
Indeed, in addition to the USB ports directly visible on the back of your motherboard, you will generally find internal USB connectors that you will connect to the front of your box.
Also, take care to check the different versions of the USB ports on the motherboard. Ideally, you mostly want USB 3.0 ports as well as a USB 3.1 Type-C port.
