Choosing the Right Tablet with Keyboard: Our Advice

My first advice is to choose according to your budget, among the tablets with keyboard in my comparison above. That said, there are a few questions you can ask yourself before placing an order, and a few criteria may be decisive in your choice.

What operating system?

IOS, Android or Windows, the choice of the operating system is essential for practical use and for ideal management of your activities. For work or for some of your extra-professional activities, there is probably software that you use regularly. So you have to choose the operating system that is capable of running them.

In the office, many of us use the Microsoft Office suite, which is more practical, more complete, and better integrated on Windows than on Android or iOS. It is for this reason that many hybrid tablets choose Windows, in order to offer exactly the same experience as on a computer.

On Windows, we find all the software online, executable in a classic way on a computer, but conversely, there are fewer leisure applications than on the Playstore or the Apple Store.

In short, if you need a hybrid tablet to send a few emails, browse the internet and play games, then you will surely have a better user experience with Android or iOS. If, on the other hand, you use Microsoft Office a lot, and special software that only exists on a PC, you will necessarily need a tablet running Windows.

Power and Performance

Depending on the type of software you want to use, you will need a more or less powerful processor and suitable RAM memory. To send emails, use Word and Excel, and play Candy Crush a bit to relax, an entry-level tablet with 3 GB of RAM will probably do the trick.

To do a little photo editing, to open a lot of web pages at the same time, and to let several applications run in the background, you are going to need more power. You need a processor that holds up, at least Intel Pentium Gold, and a RAM memory of at least 4 GB.

Finally, you will have to type in the high end, if you want to install some specialized software on video editing for example. Unsurprisingly, like a computer, the more expensive hybrid tablets, the better their performance.

Storage capacity

No surprise here either, such a large hard drive is expensive. Therefore, the more storage space you need, the more you will have to put in your pocket. If you like to download as many applications as possible, and you store ten UHD movies, then you will need a lot of storage capacity. 128 GB is the minimum, but you can find tablets with a hard drive up to 1 TB.

Conversely, if you keep only a few applications, store only light files and use the tablet with keyboard mainly for surfing the internet, 64 GB will generally be sufficient. That said, an SD or microSD port is always there to boost this storage capacity. You will be able to add between 32 GB and 512 GB depending on the model of your hybrid tablet.

Screen quality

Even at the entry-level, classic tablets or hybrid tablets have a very satisfactory screen. At a minimum, you will have a definition capable of supporting 1080p videos. For a small screen, this is more than enough. Of course, an IPS panel is a guarantee of good quality, and the more pixels the manufacturer tells you in its definition, the better.

When we go upmarket, we find Retina screens at Apple or Super Amoled at Samsung, which are clearly above the rest in terms of contrast and anti-reflective surface. Their brightness is also more important, which allows a pleasant use in any situation, including under a strong light source.

Screen size can also matter. The larger the screen, the heavier and more imposing the equipment, but the reading and viewing comfort is better. Conversely, a smaller screen is easier and more convenient to carry, but not always suitable for certain office tasks.

The Build Quality and the Accessories

At the entry-level, you will generally have a plastic frame, with a screen protector that scratches quite easily, a fragile connection, and in the end material with a limited lifespan. In mid-range and high-end, the chassis is generally made of aluminum, and all the components are expected to last a few years.

The keyboard is of course very important for a hybrid tablet. Those who use it every day need responsive keys, with computer-like typing quality. The keyboards sold with Microsoft, Samsung, or Apple tablets are of very good quality. That said, you can also buy a tablet and adapt a Bluetooth keyboard afterward. Discover our comparison of the best tablet here.

There are different keyboards from all manufacturers. Samsung notably offers flexible, very light, and very flat keyboards. It’s great for transport but we can’t use the keyboard on our lap. Others have a backlight to work without a problem when the brightness decreases, there are also keyboards with a trackpad, and others without, or 5 rows of keys instead of 6, which is not always very ergonomic. Checking the keyboard carefully before ordering seems essential to me.

Finally, a stylus is usually supplied with most hybrid tablets. It allows you to take notes, draw, do photo retouching, and interact with precision on the touch screen of our tablet with keyboard. It’s a good way to multiply the possibilities of our equipment.

This is a criterion that may be important, but as with a laptop PC, the autonomy will never be sufficient … The time of use with a full charge will vary greatly depending on the use of the tablet with keyboard. Some software is heavy and greedy in calculations and therefore in energy, streaming video also consumes a lot, so it will be difficult to define the autonomy of a hybrid tablet.

That said, on average, we will be entitled to between 5 and 12 hours for classic office use, and 3 to 8 hours for leisure use, with video streaming or video games. In short, you will understand, to work, your hybrid tablet will often be connected to the mains.

Additional features

You will necessarily watch videos, and listen to music with your keyboard tablet. So there are built-in speakers. At the main manufacturers, like Apple, Samsung, or Microsoft, the quality is always very satisfactory. For a more “exotic” tablet, at the entry-level, the sound will never be grandiose, but generally sufficient to help out from time to time.

Anyway, you have to have the tablet in front of you to get your own idea of the sound quality. Of course, a mini-jack port will still allow you to connect a headset and a Bluetooth module gives you the possibility of connecting a wireless speaker.

Some users may want to take photos with their tablets. There is always a front camera for your video communications, and some tablets also have a rear camera, like on a smartphone. The quality varies greatly depending on the brand and the type of sensor used. Check the number of pixels which must be over 8 mpx to expect satisfactory photo quality.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7

  • Laptop-to-tablet versatility
  • Built-in, enhanced Studio Mics
  • Available in two classic colors
  • Up to 10.5 hours of battery life

  • It does not come with a Surface Pen

Product Description

The Surface Pro 7 managed to convince in almost all areas of the test. Equipped with a quad-core Intel Core i5-256GB SSD, and 8GB of working memory, the Surface Pro 7 delivers peak performance without having to reduce the battery. In the test without a keypad, it lasted 8:36 and fully recharged in two hours.

The 12.3-inch screen could also convince us with its resolution of 2736 x 1824 pixels, a pixel density of 267 PPI, and a maximum brightness of 422 cd / m². The Surface Pro 7 left a bad taste in terms of price, as the keyboard has not been included since the sixth generation and has to be purchased later.

From a purely formal point of view, it’s not quite fair to send the Surface Pro 7 into our ultrabook testing procedure. After all, it’s actually a tablet.

However, the associated keyboard docking station is an integral part of the concept as the device is mainly used as a laptop replacement and therefore has to stand the comparison to conventional laptops – although you have to purchase the Type Cover separately. of the various bundled offers.

It goes without saying that the duo, which turns an input stylus available as an accessory into a trio, is a compromise in terms of device technology. With no hinge, the keyboard still requires a solid foundation, and all internal operations – processor, memory, battery, fan, and connections – housed behind the display.

Due to the built-in components, the Surface Pro is quite clunky compared to the Android and iOS competition as a pure tablet. None of this is new and has always been a part of the principle, but that does not detract from the popularity of the Windows computer, which founded a whole category of devices.

It’s hardly surprising, then, that the seventh generation Surface Pro has only been rudely modified from the previous model.

However, there are two major innovations: as with every update, the manufacturer has updated the computing unit – in this case the tenth generation of the Intel Core series has been installed. Depending on the configuration, the i3, i5, or i7 variant with an integrated graphics chip is used.

Besides the mentioned USB-C port, the equipment is also identical to the model of the previous year. In addition to a USB-A port and a MicroSD slot, this includes two 5 and 8-megapixel cameras, respectively. Biometric registration via Windows Hello is done via facial recognition via the integrated infrared camera.

Microsoft Surface Pro 6

  • Surface Arc Mouse and Surface Pen
  • The versatility of a studio and tablet
  • Signature type cover
  • Long battery life up to 13.5 hours

  • It does not come with a keyboard. It is sold separately.

Product Description

Microsoft still relies on a chic, carefully processed, high-quality aluminum case. Nothing has changed in terms of equipment either. So on the sides of the Surface Pro, there is still only the Surface Connect charging port, a MicroSD slot, a mini display port, and a USB 3.0 interface.

It’s amazing that Microsoft still doesn’t use a modern USB Type-C port. This would not only save space, but even allow the connection of external graphics cards and monitors in conjunction with Thunderbolt 3. Here the competition has the advantage.

Other than that, the other material is awesome. For example, Microsoft relies on an 8th Generation Intel Core i5 in the powerful version of the Surface Pro. The main memory is 8 GB or 16 GB, depending on configuration, and the internal SSD is optional 512 GB, 128GB, or 1 TB.

Performance in daily office and internet tasks is convincing across the board and basic photo and video editing is no problem with the Surface Pro 6.

Even graphically less complex games can be played smoothly on preinstalled Windows 10 Pro. We measured an average of 36 fps in the League of Legends benchmark test. Microsoft makes its motto come true: With the Surface Pro 6, you get the performance of a laptop in tablet format.

Using Surface Pro 6 through the 12.3-inch screen is really fun. Thanks to the high resolution of 2736 x 1824 pixels, the screen is razor-sharp and the strong checkerboard contrast of 129 to 1 guarantees good black values.

The maximum brightness is 424 candelas per square meter, which means the Surface Pro can also be used outdoors. You should still avoid sunny places due to strong reflections. Overall, the picture quality is good to very good, but some competitors offer a bit more.

  • All-new S Pen included
  • Long battery hours
  • Compact and light design

  • The tablet does not have a headphone jack.
  • It does not come with the keyboard. It is sold separately.

Product Description

At first glance, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is very reminiscent of its predecessor, the Tab S5e. It’s the same size (245 x 159mm), the OLED screen is again 10.5 inches diagonally, and the battery capacity hasn’t changed either. It’s different with the performance. But more on that later. First of all a few words on optics.

The tablet with keyboard samsung is very elegant in its gray, blue or pink aluminum case. The workmanship is excellent, the sharp edges are not visible and the corners have been nicely rounded. In addition, the Tab S6 looks very simple with a thickness of 5.7mm and a weight of 421 grams and sits comfortably in the hand.

At 16:10 aspect ratio, it’s easy to use – whether with your hands or with the associated S-Pen BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). In addition to a writing or drawing instrument for notes, the S-Pen also functions as a remote control on the Tab S6. With certain gestures (the so-called S-Pen-Air-Actions), you can use the tablet without touching it.

To do this, you need to hold down the S-Pen button. For example, you can take photos and videos in the Camera app and drag to change the recording mode. You can also listen to music and adjust the volume. The tablet responds even if the stylus is not held directly in front of the tablet.

Convenient for Notes: Handwritten notes can be exported to formats like Microsoft Word with just one click. You can also write notes while watching a video, for example.

The S-Pen charges wirelessly on the back of the tablet. According to Samsung, the 0.35 mAh battery should provide up to 11 hours of battery life after ten minutes of charging. Like its predecessor, the Tab S6 has an excellent 10.5-inch diagonal OLED display.

The screen has a WQXGA resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels with a pixel density of 288 ppi. Sharpness is still decent, but other tablets like Apple’s iPad Pro (2018) offer more in this regard. The colors and contrasts are good. We measure a checkerboard contrast value of 144: 1.

HDR content comes in different colors as Tab S6 covers 97% of the relevant DCI-P3 color space. In addition, it shines with a maximum of 541 cd / m², which should be no problem for users outdoors in direct sunlight. We measure with 50% white in the test image.

  • 2 in 1 Tablet Laptop
  • Dual Cameras for Photos and Face-to-face Chat
  • TF Card Expansion
  • 802.11b/g/n/ac wireless internet

  • It does not come with a keyboard.

Product Description

Teclast X4 is an interesting device – a hybrid that can take one form or another depending on the task at hand. Do you want to have fun on the go or read the news on the couch? A tablet with touch controls.

With the included package, you can install it on a horizontal surface by adjusting the tilt angle and turning it into a portable TV. If you need to work with text or tables, a full keyboard with a touchscreen can be connected at any time.

It is attached with magnets and also acts as a protective cover when closed. The packaging of Teclast is also decent and perfectly protects the tablet.

The screen is 11.6 “in size and has a resolution of 1920 x 1080. With large bezels, you can hold the device comfortably in your hands without accidentally clicking. On the right is a Windows touch button that will bring you to the desktop from any app or game.

The keyboard is comfortable as far as the dimensions allow. The touchpad works fine and supports all major gestures, but it’s very small.

The buttons are quite large and comfortable. Entering large text on this keyboard is easy. The keyboard housing and keys are made of soft plastic, which has a positive effect on touch sensitivity.

A high-quality 11.6-inch diagonal IPS display has optimum resolution for its 1920 x 1080 size. The image is well detailed, the PPI is 189.9. The screen was made using full lamination technology.

There is none Air space between the glass and the matrix. The image is more natural, the screen does not glare in bright light, and the tablet can be used outdoors. The brightness margin is good, 50% to 70% is sufficient for the room. Of course, you have to turn on the street.

Microsoft Surface Go 2

  • Seamless, safe, and secure
  • Built-in Kickstand
  • It includes a complete, backlit keyset and large trackpad
  • Dongle-free Bluetooth connectivity
  • Built-in WiFi, plus optional LTE Advanced

  • It does not come with a stylus pen and keyboard
  • The Surface doesn’t have a fingerprint reader

Product Description

With Surface Go, Microsoft is offering a much cheaper Surface series tablet for the first time. This has its price, especially at the expense of performance. You can find out how the tablet compares to the competition in our review.

The Microsoft Surface Go 2, which has been available since July 2020, offers a supposedly inexpensive entry-level solution if you take a closer look at the Surface family. In fact, the competition for cheap Windows tablets is not that high, so the odds of success are not bad.

The entry-level device, to which our test sample also belongs, offers a 10.5-inch IPS touchscreen in 3: 2 format. An Intel Pentium 4425Y based on the Kaby Lake architecture runs inside the passively cooled case. 8 GB of RAM and 128GB SSD complete the raw key data.

In addition to the Windows Hello camera, both devices have two additional cameras. The front camera for video telephony with 5.0 MPix and a rear camera 8.0 MPix for snapshots.

Useful features like facial recognition, which is used for Windows Hello, not only provide security but also make it easier to use.

Unfortunately, the Surface doesn’t have a fingerprint reader. The optional Type Cover keyboard does not offer this option either. The hardware functions are therefore limited to facial recognition and a TPM 2.0 chip.

The 10.5-inch touchscreen on the Surface Go comes from Sharp and offers the usual 3: 2 aspect ratio. With 1920 x 1280 Pixels, the IPS touchscreen has a good resolution. The bottom line is that this means a pixel density of 221 PPI.

Teclast X6 Pro 2

  • Multiple Ports & HD Camera
  • Long Battery Life
  • Wireless & HDMI Functions
  • Multi-position Kickstand
  • 12.6 Inch Full HD IPS screen

  • The keyboard is not included. It has to be bought separately.

Product Description

The Teclast X6 Pro is basically a tablet that can also be used as a laptop replacement. A keyboard is required for this, which is unfortunately not included in the delivery.

You get a relatively large tablet PC with a screen diagonal of 12.6 inches. This almost hits the 13-inch limit of most laptops. The resolution is also really impressive at 2880 x 1920p. This results in a pixel density of 275 PPI. It is common for Teclast to rely on an IPS screen.

For your money, you get relatively solid hardware, but not completely up to date. The player is made by the Intel Core m3-7Y30 Dual Core 1.1 GHz processor, which is also found in the Xiaomi Notebook Air 12.5 ″. The dual-core offers a clock frequency of 1.1 GHz with an increase of up to 2.6 GHz.

Although the CPU is no longer the very last (Release: 2016), it still offers very solid performance. Especially in combination with the 256 GB SSD and the 8 GB LPDDR3 RAM, the Teclast X6 Pro should be much more durable than its little brothers like the Teclast F5.

Of course, Windows 10 is on memory, which shows in particular that the manufacturer has a real laptop replacement in mind. However, the battery with a capacity of 38000mWh is only average.

Only a test can show how long you can get by in the end. It’s also worth mentioning that the X6 Pro has dual cameras. A 2 MP camera on the front and a 5MP camera on the back.

For the right workflow, Teclast offers the option of turning the X6 Pro into a full-fledged laptop replacement using a magnetic keyboard.

Samsung Galaxy Book

  • Keyboard and S-Pen included
  • Long battery life
  • Thin and lightweight design
  • Seamlessly connected with Samsung Flow*

  • It does not have a backlit. But it is good for typing nonetheless.

 Product Description

It is for me one of the best 13.3-inch tablets with a keyboard on the market. Its build quality is sublime, with a beautiful aluminum frame, a beautiful finesse, and high-end finishes. The Samsung Galaxy Book is available in 10 inches and 12 inches, with a beautiful Super AMOLED screen that offers infinite contrast. The colors are natural, the blacks very deep and the whites immaculate. For video playback, it’s perfect, especially since the definition is in UHD 4K.

The touch is very effective, it is fluid and responsive, like all tablets or smartphones from the Korean manufacturer. Here, no Android, but a Windows 10 operating system, to get as close as possible to PC use. It works great and as soon as you remove the keyboard, the Windows menu closes to go into tablet mode with the icons. It’s simple and very ergonomic.

The supplied keyboard is very good, backlit, and above all very thin. We like its typing quality and its discretion, it makes very little noise when used. We like less its lack of rigidity which does not allow us to use it directly on our knees. Finally, the performance of the tablet is worthy of a fairly high-end PC. You can use any software you want, including video editing. It’s tough!

Now as powerful as some laptops, tablets are dressed in a keyboard to become hybrids. If you were hesitating between a new computer or a good tablet, you no longer have any reason to ask yourself this question. The tablet with a keyboard is just as much a PC as a tablet with a touchscreen.

You can use it on a desk with the keyboard, like a regular laptop, but you can also hold it in your hand. You can take notes with a stylus or play a game on the touchscreen, comfortably lying in your bed. The possibilities are endless, a hybrid tablet is a practical working tool, but also a very complete leisure accessory.
